His missionary brother Nate was murdered by the savage Auca Indians. His sister Rachel went to the same tribe and led the killers to Christ.

From 1937 to 1941 God gave him special scientific preparation under the brilliant anthropologist Alexander Grigolia at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He still utilizes that knowledge today in his preaching, writing, and drawing.
